“BILATERAL MEETING – PRIME MINISTER ABE OF JAPAN AND PRIME MINISTER POHIVA OF TONGA.”

Following the completion of the Summit meeting of PALM7 on 23 May 2015 in Iwaki City, a bilateral meeting was held that afternoon between Prime Minister Abe of Japan and Prime Minister Pohiva of Tonga.

Prime Minister Pohiva conveyed warm greetings on behalf of His Majesty King Tupou VI and the Tongan Royal Family to His Majesty Emperor Akihito and the Imperial Family. Furthermore, he informed of the Coronation of His Majesty King Tupou VI which is scheduled for 4 July 2015 and that an invitation has been conveyed to Japan via diplomatic channel.

Moreover, Prime Minister Pohiva conveyed warm greetings on behalf of the Government and people of the Kingdom of Tonga to Prime Minister Abe, Government and people of Japan.

Prime Minister Pohiva noted with pleasure his meeting with Japan’s Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nakane, during his visit to Tonga in February 2015 as well as the new Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, Mr. Yukio Numata, earlier in May 2015.

Prime Minister Pohiva highlighted successful cooperation with Japan on the following projects: provision by Japan of the Maritime Vessel ‘Otuanga’ofa, the major upgrade of Vaiola Hospital and the completion of the ‘Micro-Grid System’ project.

Further exchanges were made on trade and sports and Government of Tonga support for the proposal from Japan on World Tsunami Day.

Prime Minister Abe warmly welcomed Prime Minister Pohiva as the first Prime Minister of Tonga who was the outcome of democratic election by the people of Tonga. He congratulated Tonga on the forthcoming coronation of King Tupou VI in July and that he would convey the message from His Majesty King Tupou VI to His Majesty Emperor Akihito.

Prime Minister Abe commended the ongoing cordial relations between Japan’s Imperial Family and Tonga’s Royal Family, as well as the Governments of both countries.

He thanked Prime Minister Pohiva for Tonga’s donation to Japan in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and for receiving Vice Minister Nakane during his visit to Tonga in February this year.

Further exchanges were made on infrastructure aid projects and sports.

Prime Minister Pohiva was accompanied to the bilateral meeting by the Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Dr. Palenitina Langa’oi, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr. Va’inga Tone and Her Excellency Ms. Tania Laumanulupe Tupou.
