Since March 2009, the Huawei Technologies Limited have been engaged in designing the infrastructure and network for Tonga's e-government project, better known as the Tonga National Information Network (NIN), and aimed at connecting multiple arms of government through central electronic systems.
According to Mr. Paula Pouvalu Ma'u, Secretary for Information and Communications, ‘Two of the most important applications targeted at e-government is e-education and e-health, connecting schools and main hospitals all across Tonga to the Government data system."
On the other hand, students can enjoy the benefits of ICT through E-education, as it offer potentials for face-to-face interactive teaching facilities for government primary schools students, in addition to radio school programs.
Reaching the outer islands is a major focus of the project, where e-health aims at connecting health and clinic centers in the northernmost islands of Niuafo'ou to have real-time access to medical consultations and assistance from Central Vaiola Hospital," reassured Mr. Ma'u.
With abundant new applications and services running on the network, the Government will be able to serve the people, businesses and communities quicker and better, improving working efficiency and transparency of Government.
This project is expected to be launched in early 2013, and will boost service delivery and provide economic benefits to the people of Tonga.
The scope of the network includes all main island groups - Tongatapu, Vava‘u, Ha‘apai, ‘Eua and the Niuas.
