Policy & Regulations

The Government of Tonga fully appreciates the vital role of ICT in terms of our national development.  SDP 8 lays out eight national development goals:

Goal1:    Create a better governance environment;

Goal 2:   Ensure macroeconomic stability;

Goal 3:   Promote sustained private-sector led growth:

Goal 4:   Ensure equitable distribution of the benefits of growth:

Goal 5:   Improve education standards:

Goal 6:   Improve health standards;

Goal 7:   Ensure environment sustainability and disaster risk education; and

Goal 8:   Maintain law and order, social cohesion and cultural identity.

All of these goals will require ICT as a key enabler.  It is therefore essential that specific strategies and plans are developed to incorporate ICT into our national development efforts.

This National ICT Policy outlines the National ICT Vision and the key objectives that are to be achieved through effective use of ICT and the development of new skills and jobs that will enable our country, and our people, to participate in and benefit from the global networked economy.

This National ICT Policy has been developed to enable the achievement of the following National ICT Vision:

We will maximize the power and versatility of global connectivity to create a knowledge based society; increasing innovation, accelerating the development of our nation and improving the quality of life for all Tongans.  Tonga will become an active participant in the networked economy; local companies will prosper and new jobs will be created.   ICT will allow us all to learn, share and grow; and assist us in preserving our cherished Tongan culture and values.

The National ICT Vision is further encapsulated within the following principles:

FEHOKOTAKI, FETU'UTAKI, FEAKO'AKI, FE'OFA'AKI, FIKA ‘ULUAKI
