The Hon. Prime Minister, Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, in his capacity as Minister for Internal affairs, unveiled the Oceania Federation Confederation(OFC) Education plaque to marked the opening of the new Education Centre at The Tonga Football Association Headquarter in Veitongo on Sataurday 23rd September 2017.
The OFC Education Centre is a wide programme by Oceania to provide each OFC members with an education institute. The centre will offered training and qualification in various areas of football including coaching; refereeing; Administration and Management; Sport Medicine and fitness; high performance and elite development; club management and development; and event management.
This is one of OFC aim to take active role in encouraging personal; community and professional development in Oceania by offering education hubs and resources for the development of careers in football; upskill local volunteers to develop football in their communities; encouraging and guiding players, coaches and volunteers to improve their abilities and provide a sustainable Oceania-wide educational network.
The Hon Prime Minter expressed his gratitude to the Senior Vice-President of FIFA and President of OFC for recognizing Tonga to be one of the pilot nation to the Oceania Education Centre.
“ I am pleased to extend my full support of the government of Tonga to such an initiative no doubt that the OFC centre will open doors and opportunity for Tongans who have careers in football. It will also have the basic foundations for the development of this sport by providing structured pathways for qualifications and careers for those interested in football and sports…… Tonga’s youth and players will have an educational institute to learn and share knowledge and skills and experience in football as this game continues to grow and advance in Tonga the launch of this centre is timely.”
The welcoming address was delivered by Lord Ve’ehala of Tonga Football Association followed by a remark by Dr. David Chung.
