Message of Condolence to the Government of Vanuatu

A message of condolence from the Government of Tonga, was conveyed from the Prime Minister of Tonga, the Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, to the Prime Minister of Vanuatu, the Hon. Charlot Salwai, on 19th June 2017, on the occasion of the passing of the President of Vanuatu, His Excellency, the Late Baldwin Londsdale.

In his letter, the Hon. Prime Minister stated that:

“It is with deepest sympathy that I convey my condolences, on behalf of the people and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, upon the passing of the President of the Republic of Vanuatu, His Excellency Baldwin Lonsdale.


 We hope that Your Honour and the people of the Republic of Vanuatu will draw some measure of comfort knowing that the people of the Kingdom of Tonga care and share in your loss”

HE Baldwin Lonsdale served as President of Vanuatu from 22 September 2014 until his passing on 17 June 2017.

President Lonsdale was a civil servant who served as Secretary General of the province of Torba on the island of Mota Lava. He became the second Anglican priest to be elected president of Vanuatu.
