April, 2011. Significant changes have occurred in Tonga in the last 5 years. One of the most significant events during this time was the first democratic elections held in Tonga in November 2010. Along with the implementation of democratic processes, a progression toward transparency, accountability and community engagement by the Tongan government, the National Youth Stakeholder Forum is engaging in a process of review and consultation with all stakeholders involved in youth affairs in Tonga.
The Tongan National Youth Stakeholder Forum will be hosting a consultation on the 14th of April at the Tonga National Council of Churches, Vaololoa to discuss the future of youth affairs in Tonga. In support of this initiative, the newly elected Hon. S. Fe'aomoeata Vakata, Minister of Training, Employment, and Youth & Sport will be attending the forum to discuss the future programmes and strategies in youth affairs in Tonga.
The youth of Tonga comprise over 50% of the population, making them one of the most significant groups in the country. Youth are over represented in a number of areas of concern, such as crime, violence, poor health and unemployment, indicating the need for action to support the youth to achieve positive outcomes. In addition to the need for services to support youth, an opportunity to recognise the achievements of youth in Tonga in sports, academic achievements and community participation is also important.
A wide range of stakeholders have been invited to attend the consultation. The National Youth Stakeholder Forum aims to encourage collaboration and networking between all organisations including churches, civil society, and government who work to support youth development. It is expected that from this consultation a clear definition and guideline for the National Youth Stakeholder Forum will be developed, as per the needs and expectations of the youth stakeholders in Tonga at this time.
The results of the consultation will be reported by the National Youth Stakeholder Forum to the Minster for Training, Employment, Youth & Sports, following the consultation.
About The National Youth Stakeholder Forum:
The National Youth Stakeholder Forum was created in 2008, following the formation of the Ministry of Training, Employment, Youth & Sports, who provide a secretariat role to the forum. The National Youth Stakeholder Forum is a network of organizations involved in youth affairs in Tonga. It was set up to enhance collaboration and partnerships between organizations working in the area of youth, by encouraging information sharing and discussion. The Forum was also seen to be a platform to coordinate youth programmes to implement the National Youth Strategy 2007 - 2012, and has been instrumental in coordinating number of International Youth Day events in Tonga, as well as making the link for local, regional and international organizations with stakeholders involved in youth affairs in Tonga.
