The Hon. Prime Minister and Minister for Education & Training, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva opened the newly reconstructed classrooms for Fakakakai Government Primary School on Thursday 30 July 2015.
The Fakakakai Primary School building was demolished by Cyclone Ian in January 2014 and as a result students had to use the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint’s Church Building in the Island as temporary classrooms. The five classrooms, toilet facilities and two staff quarters cost around TOP$869,290.00.
The reconstruction of Fakakakai Primary School building was jointly funded by the Government of New Zealand and the Asian Development Bank and constructed by the Puloka Construction Group Limited.
The opening ceremony was also attended by H.E Sarah Walsh, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga, , Hon. ‘Etuate Sungalu Lavulavu, Minister for Infrastructure & Tourism, Mr. Saia Faletau, ADB Country Representative and representatives from the parties involved in this project.
