His Majesty The King honours War Veterans' Remembrance Sunday

November 11, is celebrated by countries all over the world as it is marked in Tonga on a Sunday, closest to November 11,hence, Remembrance Sunday', and it is being dedicated to those who serve, fought and  lost their lives in the First World War.

It is a day to remember the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war.

This year's Memorial Day took place on Sunday 13 November, where His Majesty King George Tupou V honors the Day by laying of the first wreath.

The order of procession for the Memorial Service; includied a Guard of Honour and the laying of Wreaths at the Cenotaph at Pangai si'i  Ground in Nuku'alofa.

Also present at the occasion and paying their respects were the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, Nobles of the realm, distinguished members of Parliament and His Majesty's Cabinet Ministers.

Foreign dignitaries were represented at the Memorial by Mr. Yasuo Takase (Japan), Mr. Wang Donghua (People's Republic of China), Their Excellencies Mr. Thomas Roth (Australia), the Acting New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. Dominic Walton-France and the British Charge d'Affairs to Tonga Mr. Tim Smart and the Tonga's honorary consuls for the Republic of Germany; Mr. Carl Sanft, Netherlands; Mr. Laki Niu, France; Mrs. Tupou Pasikala Fiu, Sweden; Ms. 'Aloma Johansson and the Republic of Korea; Mr. Tevita Puloka have also laid a wreath in memoriam of those who fought in those countries.

This Day was especially dedicated to all Tongan servicemen, current and retired veterans.

In presence of families and relatives of army veterans, wreaths were also laid by the Commander of the Tonga Services, Brigadier General Tau'aika ‘Uta'atu and lfamily members of the World War I veterans including the Hon. Lord Vaea, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries who laid a wreath in honor of the late Baron Vaea, a former Prime Minister and World War I veteran.

The Girl Guides and Queen Salote College representative are also participated in the occasion together with the Queen Salote College students.

At the conclusion of the solemn occasion was the ‘The Last Post', which signifies the end of the day and the final farewell in military life, conducted by the Tonga Defence Services' Royal Corps of Musicians, traditionally played to introduce the two minutes silence of respect while reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice given by the men and women who fought in the First World War.

The ceremony ends with a prayer service led by Free Wesleyan Secretary, Rev. Tevita Havea and assisted by other churches representative from Roman Catholic Church, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Seven Day Adventist and Church of Tonga.

Remembrance Sunday, also known as Veterans Day, Armistice or Poppy Day, is usually held on the second Sunday in November, usually the Sunday nearest to 11 November. The significance being that to recall the official end of World War I on that date in 1918, as the major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

Another war Memorial Day being celebrated in Tonga is ANZAC Day which remembers Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Island army corps servicemen who lost their lives in the Second World War. This marks April 25 of every year a public holiday in Tonga.

Moments to treasure as Monarch and Head of State visit school

2 August 2011 In the midst of a busy week in the event of His Majesty's Official Birthday celebration, His Majesty King George Tupou V has graciously accompanied the Australian Head of State - The Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce on her education visitation programme to the Government Primary School (GPS) of Nuku'alofa this morning.

Upon His Majesty and the Governor-General's arrival at the school, a crowd of students, parents and teachers flanked the entrance gate and tapa (ngatu) clad driveway with waving Tonga flags to greet the beloved Monarch and Australia's Head of State. These are proud and historical moments that these children will never forget.

The School visit also included The Princess Royal, Her Royal Highness, Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita, His Excellency Mr Bryce and the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, His Excellency Thomas Roth who was also greeted by the Hon. ‘Ana Taufe'ulungaki and her Director, Mrs ‘Emili Pouvalu and senior Education officers from the Ministry of Education, Women Affairs and Culture.

The Nuku'alofa Government Primary School caters for some 571 students with 20 teachers in 2011. There is a total of 19 classes.

During the visit, His Majesty and the Governor General observed some teaching demonstration of the English language and Mathematics subjects using Australian funded curriculum materials for Class 4 level.

There were also children presentations and a brief entertainment.

Upon Their departure, His Majesty and the Governor-General observed a physical fitness performance by the school children in appreciation of the Royal Party's visit.

Royal Luncheon to celebrate King's Birthday

1 August 2011 Following the Birthday Military Parade at the Mala'e Pangai, His Majesty King George Tupou V and Their Excellencies The Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE arrived at the northern side of Mala'a Pangai to attend a Royal Luncheon hosted by Tonga's Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano and members of His Majesty's Cabinet Ministers.

Hundreds of distinguished guests and visiting delegations from the military forces, diplomatic corps, senior government officials, clergymen and nobility were among the invited to the Luncheon.

The Luncheon was marked by two important speeches first given by His Majesty The King Who proposed a goodwill Toast to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Queen of Australia followed by a responding speech and a Toast in Honour of His Majesty's Birthday from Her Excellency The Governor-General. The momentous goodwill exchange was marked with each the playing of each country's national anthem, that is guest and hosting country.

In her  speech, Her Excellency extended her warmest greetings and gratitude to His Majesty, the people and Government of the Kingdom of Tonga for their tremendous hospitality and further encourages continuing stronger ties between the two nations.

Her Excellency in particular, also stated that in addition to Tonga being one of Australia's important bilateral Pacific island nation, Tonga and Australia also share a common interest in the cultivation of the game of rugby where Tonga produces many of Australia's top rugby stars which included big names  like the Fainga'a twins, George Smith, Toutai Kefu and many others.

At the conclusion of the Luncheon, His Majesty The King, The Vice Regal Party and senior members of the Royal Family retired briefly to the Royal Palace, before attending a Cultural entertainment moments later at the main Malae Pangai.

The Entertainment for the Royal Birthday celebration were a Solo Tau'olunga performance by the Hon. Salote Maumautaimi Tuku'aho, followed by a Group Tau'olunga performance by students of Queen Salote College.

The last cultural item was a Lakalaka performance from the village of Tatakamotonga, an estate of His Serene Highness Prince Tungi.

Governor-General honours King's Birthday Military Parade

1 August 2011  Every year, the celebration of the Official Birthday of His Majesty King George Tupou V, is marked with the ceremonial Military Parade led by the Tonga Defence Services which involves a kaleidoscope of military music and trooping of the Colour and Mass Band.

The Mala'e Pangai Lahi was packed in the early hours of the morning with thousands of people who came to see their Monarch and the marching of the Royal Guards.

Members of the Royal Family including Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Tupouto'a-Lavaka and Princess Nanasipau'u, Their Royal Highnesses Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita and Princess Mele Siu'ilikutapu joined His Majesty King George Tupou V and the Australian Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AP at the Royal pavilion for the Military Parade.

The Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, His Majesty's Cabinet Ministers, Nobles of the Realm, distinguished members of the diplomatic corps, members of the clergy, armed forces retired veterans, overseas defence attaches and visitors also attended the Parade in ceremonial dress and uniform.

A memorable highlight of this year's Birthday Parade is the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AP arriving in an open car and proceed to the Royal pavilion, as His Majesty's Royal Guest.

A cannon gun salute boomed across the densely packed Mala'e Pangai in Nuku'alofa centre in unison with the playing of the national anthem, marking the commencement of the royal birthday parade.

Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AP was invited by the Tonga Defence Services Royal Guards and Navy Parade Commander to be this year's Review Officer, in Honour of His Majesty's Birthday.

Her Excellency, The Governor General of Australia, was accompanied by the Parade Commander, her Aide-de-Camp and Tongan Equerry officer during the ceremonial  Inspection of the Parade, while the Mass Band plays ‘Where e'er you walk' by George Friderick Handle and the quick march ‘Army of the Nile' by Kenneth Alford.

Following the inspection, was a spectacular display of the trooping of the Mass Band in Slow and Quick Time with applauds  from the parade guest shelters and salute to the Royal Pavillion.

The Military Parade concluded with the General Salute as they Tongan Defence Services Advance in Review Order with the Mass Band playing the National Anthem of Australia.

State Visit of His Majesty King George Tupou V to New Zealand

5 July 2011 The Governor-General, Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, New Zealand's Head of State received His Majesty King George Tupou V of Tonga  this week on His Majesty's New Zealand State Visit.

Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, Governor-General of New Zealand, and Lady Susan Satyanand hosted a State Welcome and Dinner for HM King George Tupou V of Tonga on 5 July 2011.

This is the first State Welcome that has been held at Government House Wellington since the completion of its conservation.

The State Welcome included a Haka Pōwhiri by the New Zealand Defence Force Māori Cultural Party, a Royal Tri-Service Guard of Honour, students of Wellington College performing a haka, and a performance by the Wellington East Girls' College Choir.
