This week, Tonga’s Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries, Hon. Semisi Fakahau will lead Tonga’s delegation to the Second Summit of the Forum of India-Pacific Islands Co-operation (FIPIC) held in New Delhi, India from 19-21 August 2015.
The Prime Minister of India, H.E Mr Nahendra Modi has extended an invitation to Tonga’s Prime Minister, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva to attend this Summit, but due to urgent commitments in Government, the Hon. Prime Minister has nominated the Hon. Semisi Fakahau to head Tonga’s delegation.
The First Summit was held in November 2014 in Fiji. Following this meeting, Prime Minister Modi announced several areas that India wishes to further develop cooperation with Tonga and the Pacific Islands, including climate change, ICT, technical assistance on diplomatic training to assistance in the sectors of agriculture, education, health and energy.
The Summit in India, FIPIC is an initiative to reinvigorate relations between India and the Pacific Islands, and this year’s summit will be held at several locations in India from Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.
Tonga’s Minister of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries is expected to meet with Prime Minister Modi and high level delegations to discuss opportunities for shared expertise in agricultural, healthcare and IT development.
Accompanying the Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries are the Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet, Dr. Palenitina Langa’oi, and senior officials from the core agencies of Government, namely, Deputy Secretary ‘Akanesi Taufa (Prime Minister’s Office), HSH Princess Kalaniuvalu, Asian Desk Officer (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and Deputy Secretary, Siosaia Vaipuna (Office of the Public Service Commission).
The Indian Government extended full hospitality to Tonga’s delegation, and the participation at this Summit was at no cost to the Government of Tonga.
The delegation will return to Tonga next week.
